Hydrofoil Sailing DNA: iFLY® Engineered for Speed and Control

Why iFLY®? The Core Concept of Controlled Foiling

iFLY® is built around one core idea: high performance through controllable speed. Many foilers become demanding or narrow in their usable range as soon as the pace increases. iFLY15 was developed differently. Its FlySafe® dynamic intelligent foil control system supports a stable flight attitude, so the sailor can stay focused on trim, speed, angles, and maneuvers instead of constantly fighting pitch and ride height. The result is a platform that gives ambitious sailors real performance while also making foiling more accessible than many would expect.

Both. That is exactly what defines the concept. iFLY15 was designed to make the entry into foiling far more realistic for sailors with basic sailing skills and some trapeze experience, while still delivering the pace, responsiveness, and technical depth that strong sailors expect from a true high-performance platform. It is not a watered-down foiler for beginners, and it is not a nervous specialist that only works for a tiny group of experts. It is a serious sailing machine with a much broader usable range.

Stable flight is not just a nice-to-have. It does not make foiling dull or overly easy. It allows the sailor to focus on what sailing is really about. When the platform flies in a controlled and composed way, the sailor can focus on pressure, balance, trim, mode changes, and clean maneuvers. That is where the real quality of hydrofoil sailing begins. Stable flight also makes a major difference in waves, gusts, and high-speed situations, because performance becomes more repeatable and more usable instead of more chaotic.

Absolutely. Controlled foiling does not reduce the sporting challenge. It raises the level at which the boat can actually be sailed. In steady, moderate wind and flat water, most sailors will find the iFLY remarkably easy to fly. But that is only the beginning. Once the pace rises, the sea state builds, and maneuvers need to stay clean at speed, the platform still demands precision, timing, feel, and commitment. For advanced sailors and racers, that is exactly what makes it rewarding.

One of iFLY’s biggest strengths is how well it works across a wide range of skill levels. In easy conditions, sailing skills and trapeze experience are enough to begin foiling on iFLY15.

But iFLY also performs exceptionally well before that stage.

Beginner sailor:
With the NoFly Mode, which can be selected on the flight control system within seconds, iFLY15 becomes a very forgiving and stable displacement-mode sailing platform. This allows sailors to learn step by step on the same boat, building core sailing skills before progressing into full foiling.

That makes iFLY® unique: it is not only a high-performance foiling platform, but also an unusually effective learning platform. In light to moderate winds and flat water, the first steps are especially easy. Coaching helps sailors progress faster and unlock the boat’s potential earlier.

Advanced hydrofoil sailor:
As experience grows, the usable performance window expands dramatically. Advanced sailors can foil earlier, sail faster, and stay in control across a much wider range of conditions.

For very strong and highly advanced sailors, the iFLY® RAZZOR Pro with differential rake control offers an even sharper level of performance, control, and foil tuning.

Yes. iFLY15 is designed for one or two sailors and performs exceptionally well in both configurations. Single-handed and double-handed sailing are integral to the concept from the outset, not an afterthought. The platform supports both solo sailing and double-trapeze sailing and is ideally suited for crew weights up to 180 kg. In practice, iFLY15 is highly effective for solo performance sailing, coaching, training, and group sessions, whether sailed single-handed or 2-up. It also works extremely well when one sailor is getting into foiling with a professional sailing coach or a more experienced sailor on board.

Technology and Boat Design – Built for Control

High-end technology, simplified for the sailor.
From the sailor’s point of view, the system is not difficult to use at all. In fact, it is a major part of what makes the iFLY® foiling experience so accessible and controlled. One of the core ideas behind iFLY® is that the four T-foils do not need to be actively operated by the sailor while sailing. FlySafe® works autonomously in real time to support stable and controlled flight, so the sailor can stay focused on trim, speed, angles, and maneuvers instead of constantly managing foil behavior.

Wand sticks on both hulls continuously and independently measure flight height. This input is transferred into a highly sophisticated mechanical system inside a protected box in the hull, where it is shielded from dirt and damage. From there, the signal is transmitted via carbon rods to the flaps of the main foils, much like an aircraft control surface. The system is engineered so that not every small wave disturbs the platform, which is a key part of why iFLY15 feels so stable, predictable, and composed in flight.

Because simplicity, reliability, and direct response matter on the water. FlySafe® works fully mechanically, with no batteries, no charging, and no dependence on electronics while sailing. This makes the system robust, immediate, and highly effective in real sailing conditions.

No. FlySafe® has been refined over 10 years into a robust, field-proven mechanical system designed for real sailing conditions, including salt water, sand, and regular beach launching. It is designed for low maintenance, everyday robustness, and simple long-term use. The bearings are maintenance-free and do not require lubrication. In practice, only some shock cords typically need to be replaced after around two years. Beyond that, this area of the iFLY15 is essentially maintenance-free.

On the contrary. FlySafe® does not reduce the sporting challenge. It creates a more stable and more controllable high-performance platform. The sailor still needs sailing skills to trim cleanly, read pressure, manage angles, and execute maneuvers at speed. The real advantage is that the boat can be pushed harder with greater control and consistency, especially as the pace rises or the conditions get rougher. At the same time, FlySafe® is a key reason why iFLY15 offers such a fast learning curve when sailors step into foiling.

T-foils are central to the iFLY® concept of stable, controllable hydrofoil sailing, and we believe they are the superior foil configuration for this type of boat. They support early takeoff, stable maneuvers, and controlled, composed flight across a wide range of conditions. T-foils have also become the proven direction at the very top end of the sport. SailGP and the America’s Cup moved to T-foils for clear performance reasons, underlining how relevant this foil concept has become in modern high-performance development.

iFLY15 is designed with crash boxes and replaceable bearings to help protect the main structure if a foil runs aground or strikes a floating object while foiling. On the main foils, the bearings are integrated into the carbon hulls and are part of the crash box concept, helping to shield the surrounding structure from more serious damage. The rudder foils also use replaceable bearings, located in the rudder box. The principle is that defined, replaceable parts absorb the load instead of turning foil contact with the ground into major structural damage. For the sailor, the key benefit is that in many cases the damage remains limited and financially manageable, even in situations that could otherwise become very expensive. This helps protect the owner’s investment and reflects the broader modular design philosophy of the iFLY15.

Because the whole package works together. FlySafe®, the T-foils, and the overall platform concept are all designed around one key idea: speed under control. That gives iFLY15 an unusual combination of early access to foiling, genuine high-performance capability, and confidence across a much wider range of conditions than many sailors would expect from a foiling boat.

Handling, Launching and Transport – Easy and Fast to Launch

Launching and recovery are easier than many sailors expect from a foiling boat. The foils are not permanently fixed to the boat, as they are on a Moth. They can be raised and lowered easily, much like the boards and rudders on a conventional beach catamaran such as a Hobie Cat. A dedicated system keeps the rudder foils securely in the raised position, and the foils lie flat along the hull. This allows iFLY® to be launched from shore on a conventional beach trolley and brought back ashore just as easily after sailing.

iFLY® is designed for quick rigging and fast launching and is typically ready to sail in about 10 minutes from its boat park position ashore.

iFLY15 is easy to tow behind a car on a conventional road trailer, either flat or diagonally. With a platform width of 2.50 m, the boat remains road legal in most countries and can be transported horizontally without disassembly. This keeps transport simple and flexible, whether you are heading to your local sailing venue, a coaching session, or a regatta.

Sailing and Performance – Ready for Real Conditions

iFLY15 is designed for very early takeoff. In practice, liftoff typically requires around 7 knots of breeze, while sustained foiling can already be possible from around 6 knots once the boat is flying. That early lift is a key part of the concept, because it opens the door to much more real foiling time instead of limiting the experience to a narrow breeze window.

iFLY15 is built for a very wide range of real sailing conditions. Flat water, chop, waves, and open-water sailing are all part of the concept. iFLY15 and iFLY® RAZZOR Pro are designed to stay controllable and deliver performance across all of them. Combined with a broad wind range from around 6 to 25 knots, that versatility is one of the major strengths of the iFLY® concept and a key reason why the platform is so practical in everyday sailing life.

Very well. Gusts and shifts are part of real sailing, and iFLY® was developed around the idea of speed under control rather than a narrow all-or-nothing setup. Because iFLY can sail at up to around 2.5 times the true wind speed, the apparent wind often remains much more stable than the true wind itself. That means gusts and shifts often affect the sailor less abruptly than many would expect from a foiling boat. This is a key reason why the platform remains so controllable and confidence-inspiring in dynamic conditions. The more experienced the sailor, the more of the full performance window can be used with confidence.

Early takeoff and efficient flight.
iFLY15 is designed for very early takeoff, and that is where one of the most fascinating parts of the platform begins. A gust of around 6 to 7 knots can already be enough to lift the boat onto the foils. Once flying, only minimal wind is needed to keep foiling fast, provided the sailor steers cleanly and trims the sail correctly. That is where apparent wind becomes decisive. If the flow is maintained and the platform keeps gliding efficiently, it creates one of the most remarkable sensations in hydrofoil sailing. The moment you make a mistake and drop back into conventional non-foiling mode, you need that takeoff trigger again to lift back onto the foils.

Progressive access to foiling.
The NoFly Mode is designed for step-by-step learning and confident progression. It helps less experienced sailors build confidence before moving fully into flight and gives more advanced sailors an additional setup option when conditions are stronger than expected or when a more conservative mode is the smarter choice. At the same time, iFLY15 remains uncompromisingly engineered as a true foiling platform.

Absolutely. In the right conditions, iFLY® can feel highly composed and confidence-inspiring. But that does not reduce the challenge. Once the pace rises, the sea state builds, and maneuvers need to stay clean at speed, the boat still demands precision, timing, pressure awareness, and commitment. That is exactly why both iFLY15 and especially the iFLY® RAZZOR Pro remain deeply rewarding for strong sailors.

High performance with control.
iFLY® was developed around a different and, for many sailors, more valuable idea: high performance with control across a much broader usable range. That is why the platform combines early access to foiling, real speed, sea-going versatility, and a much wider performance window in one concept.

iFLY15 One Design or iFLY® RAZZOR Pro – What Sets Them Apart?

A quick comparison below. The key differences are easy to spot at a glance.

Feature iFLY15 One Design iFLY® RAZZOR Pro
Concept Direct access to controllable foiling Sharper high-performance setup
Sailor profile Fast progression into foiling Advanced performance sailors
Flight control FlySafe® FlySafe® + MDT
Rig options Standard rig Larger rigs
Character Accessible, stable Aggressive, tunable
Learning curve Fast entry High-performance focus

The detailed FAQs underneath explain how they translate into performance on the water.

The step from iFLY15 One Design to iFLY® RAZZOR Pro is not a change of concept, but a clear step up in performance potential. The core platform remains the same, but the iFLY® RAZZOR Pro adds a more aggressive setup with larger rig options, dedicated foil configurations, and the additional authority of MDT. The result is a sharper, more powered, and more tunable package for sailors who want to push higher upwind loads, greater pressure, and a more advanced performance window.

iFLY15 One Design is built to deliver direct access to controllable foiling within a highly capable performance platform. iFLY® RAZZOR Pro takes the same platform further toward the top end, with more foil authority, more power potential, and more tuning depth. The difference is not basic capability, but how far the performance envelope is opened up for the sailor.

MDT gives the sailor additional control over the main foils while sailing by changing the foils’ angle of attack on the water. In practice, this creates more righting moment, more performance potential, and better support for larger rigs, especially for sailors pushing hard upwind and in racing mode.

It is the next performance layer of the same platform. The DNA remains the same: controllable speed, stable flight attitude, and real high-performance hydrofoil sailing. The iFLY® RAZZOR Pro builds on that foundation with a more aggressive performance package for sailors who want to sail closer to the top of the platform’s potential.

Yes. That is one of the strengths of the platform. A sailor can start on iFLY15 One Design, build consistency, flight time, and confidence, and later step into iFLY® RAZZOR Pro for more power, more foil tuning, and a higher performance ceiling. That progression is logical, efficient, and fully in line with the modular concept behind iFLY15.

Skills, Learning Curve and Coaching – Fast Access to Foiling

Sailing skills and trapeze experience. That is the basic requirement to start foiling on iFLY15. The platform is designed to make the transition into foiling far more realistic than many expect, while still offering the depth and performance of a true high-performance sailing machine.

Very quickly. The combination of stable flight attitude and controllable speed gives iFLY15 a learning curve that is faster than that of any other performance foiler. Most sailors with trapeze experience get into foiling surprisingly quickly and build confidence step by step instead of fighting an overly nervous platform.

Progressive access to foiling. The NoFly Mode helps less experienced sailors build confidence before moving fully into flight and gives more advanced sailors an additional setup option when conditions are stronger than expected or when a more conservative mode is the smarter choice. At the same time, iFLY15 remains uncompromisingly engineered as a true foiling platform.

Not at all. Coaching can accelerate the learning curve at every level. For sailors entering foiling, it helps shorten the path into stable, confident flight. For more advanced iFLY® sailors, coaching can unlock cleaner maneuvers, better timing, sharper flight control, and more refined performance in both light air and stronger conditions. It can also sharpen sail trim, rake control, mast rotation, and the finer details of accurate steering. Even experienced sailors often discover that a few key adjustments open the door to an entirely new level of foiling experience.

Absolutely. That is exactly what defines the concept. iFLY15 was designed to make the entry into foiling far more realistic for sailors with trapeze and sailing skills, while still delivering the pace, responsiveness, and technical depth that strong sailors expect from a true high-performance platform. It is a serious sailing machine with a much broader usable range, whether sailed solo, double trapeze, or in a coaching setup with a professional sailing coach on board.

Buying an iFLY, Production and Delivery – Built in Europe, Delivered Worldwide

Built in Europe. The FlySafe® flight control system is made in Germany. Carbon composite construction as well as pre-assembly and final assembly are done in Portugal. That gives iFLY® a clear European production identity and keeps the build philosophy closely tied to engineering precision, direct technical know-how, and high build quality.

Yes. iFLY® is shipped worldwide. That makes the platform accessible well beyond its core European base and is one of the reasons why the iFLY® fleet has grown into a truly international community.

Flexible and hands-on. In Europe, iFLY® can be delivered completely disassembled for final assembly by the customer on site, or the customer can book professional assembly by CEC Catamarans, ideally combined with coaching.

Usually assembled in a container. Overseas delivery is typically done with assembled boats in a container, with a maximum of two boats fitting into a 20-foot container. Alternatively, iFLY® can also be delivered disassembled for final assembly by the customer on site, depending on the project and destination.

Yes. A ready-to-fly delivery option is part of the concept. iFLY® can be delivered with complete onsite assembly and personal handover, so the owner starts with a boat that is not only delivered, but properly introduced and set up.

Truly international. The iFLY® fleet is sailed in 27 nations and supported by an active network of events, owners, and foiling sailors across different countries and sailing scenes. That matters because owners are joining not just a boat platform, but a broader international foiling community.

Modularity, Upgrades and Maintenance – Built to Evolve, Easy to Upgrade

Easy upgrades, straightforward repairs, and a platform that can be configured precisely to the sailor’s needs. That is what fully modular means on iFLY®. The concept allows key components and performance features to be adapted, upgraded, or replaced without locking the boat into a rigid one-piece structure. This gives iFLY® unusual long-term flexibility for setup, ownership, and technical development.

All parts can be replaced. That is one of the major advantages of the iFLY® concept. The platform is fully modular and can be completely disassembled, including hulls and crossbeams. On boat concepts where structural elements are permanently bonded together, serious damage can quickly become a much larger problem. On iFLY®, modular construction allows every part of the platform to be replaced in a far more targeted way. That is a major advantage for repairs, long-term serviceability, and lasting ownership quality.

No. For a high-performance foiling platform, day-to-day ownership is remarkably straightforward. The systems are designed around practical use, robust mechanical solutions, and serviceable construction rather than unnecessary complexity. That is a major part of why iFLY® works not only as a spectacular foiler, but as a realistic long-term ownership platform.

Racing and Class Community – Real Racing, Real Community

Annual owners event, community, racing, and European championship atmosphere. The event near Geneva is the key annual owners and racing event of the class. It brings together iFLY sailors for racing, coaching, exchange, and real community around the platform. For many owners, it is one of the highlights of the season.

Yes. The iFLY Foiling Days are special events where sailors can experience iFLY® live, book coaching, get to know the platform in detail, and watch its performance on the water up close.

Yes. iFLY® can be sailed in dedicated events such as the iFLY European Cup Le Mailly, and regatta sailing is also possible in open mixed fleets, such as Texel, Hyères, and other foiling events. iFLY® has a very favorable rating due to its relatively small sail area and compact 15-foot platform, which makes it especially interesting in mixed-fleet racing. iFLY® has also been present in regattas at major foiling events such as Foiling Week on Lake Garda and Foiling Week USA.
